Background Requirements Proficiency in Food Science must be demonstrated by satisfactory completion of course work in the following areas: food chemistry, food microbiology, food processing and biochemistry. Background course requirements will normally be satisfied with completion of a BS degree in Food Science from an accredited institution. Students deficient in any of these areas will be required to complete coursework to fulfill these background course requirements.

If your scores do not meet the minimum requirements (click HERE for PDF) you will be required to take a placement test through the Maryland English Institute (MEI). Based on this placement examination, it may be determined that: - The student has satisfactory English language proficiency. - The student needs more English language training, requiring successful completion of the semi-intensive English Language course at MEI. - The student needs to complete a full-time intensive English language program before being admitted to the academic program. - Students who need further English must enroll in the required course during their first semester of study at the University.

Applicants must take the Aptitude Test of theGraduate Record Examination (link is external) (GRE-General Test) must be taken by all applicants. Minimum GRE scores of 500 each on the Verbal and Quantitative sections, as well as a 3.5-5.0 on the Analytical Writing section are required.
